Richard A. Snelling
Richard Arkwright Snelling (born February 18, 1927 in Allentown , Pennsylvania , † August 13, 1991 in Shelburne , Vermont ) was an American politician of the Republican Party and governor of the state of Vermont.
Life
Snelling was born in Allentown, eastern Pennsylvania, in 1927. During World War II , he served in the United States Army . From 1959 to 1960 and from 1973 to 1976 he was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives . In 1976 Snelling was elected governor of Vermont for the first time with 53.4 percent of the vote against the Democrat Stella Hackel and held this office after three re-elections from January 6, 1977 to January 10, 1985. In 1986 he ran for the US Senate , but was defeated by his Democratic opponent Patrick Leahy .
1990 Snelling was re-elected governor, this time prevailing against Peter Welch , and took office on January 10, 1991. After Snellings sudden death due to a heart attack the Democrat was Howard Dean , who at that time Deputy Governor was, new Governor of Vermont.
Snelling married Barbara W. Snelling in 1947 , who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1993 to 1997. The couple had four children.
