Roy Romer

Roy Rudolf Romer (born October 31, 1928 in Garden City , Kansas ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was the 39th governor of the US state of Colorado .

Romer, previously a member of the House of Representatives (1958–1962) and the Senate of Colorado (1962–1966) and State Treasurer from 1977 , was elected to the governorate in 1986 and re-elected in 1990 and 1994. This makes him the last Colorado governor to hold three terms.

From 1992 to 1993 he was chairman of the National Governors Association . 1997 to 1999 he served as co-chair ( General Chairman ) of the Democratic National Committee , the party organization of the Democrats. Romer is considered one of the country's outstanding educational politicians.

On July 1, 2001, he became Superintendent of the United School District of Los Angeles ; he held this post until 2006. He and his wife Bea have seven children and 15 grandchildren. One of his children is the economist Paul Romer , who was awarded the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics in 2018.
