Bill Owens (politician, 1950)
William F. "Bill" Owens (born October 22, 1950 in Fort Worth , Texas ) is an American politician . He is a member of the Republican Party and was the 40th governor of the state of Colorado from 1999 to 2007 .
Career
After studying at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin , Owens worked as a consultant for over 20 years, including for Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu . He is regarded as an expert on Russia and the Soviet Union and regularly gives lectures on this topic.
Owens has been active in politics since 1982, including as a member of the Colorado House of Representatives from 1982 to 1988 and then as a member of the State Senate from 1988 to 1994. In 1994 he was elected State Treasurer of Colorado.
Owens won the 1998 gubernatorial elections by a thin majority against his Democratic rival Gail Schoettler and was sworn in as Colorado governor on January 12, 1999. In 2002, he met Democrat Rollie Heath on a re-election attempt and was confirmed with a clear majority of 64% of the vote, the best result ever achieved by any Colorado governor. In 2007 his term as governor ended. He was succeeded by the Democrat Bill Ritter .
