Teller Ammons (born December 3, 1895 in Denver , Colorado , † January 16, 1972 ibid) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and from 1937 to 1939 the 27th governor of the state of Colorado.

Early years and political advancement

Teller Ammons was the son of Elias M. Ammons , who was also governor of Colorado between 1913 and 1915. He participated as a soldier in the US Army in the First World War in France in part and then went to 1921, the University of Denver . He then studied law at Westminster Law School . There he took his law exam in 1929. In the meantime he worked on a ranch and in the newspaper business.

Like his father, Teller Ammons was a member of the Democratic Party. His political career began in 1930 with his election to the Colorado Senate . He held this mandate until 1935. That year he became a Denver attorney. On November 3, 1936, he was elected as his party's candidate for the new governor of his state.

Ammons took up his new office on January 12, 1937. During his two-year term in office, a forest and fisheries authority was established. The country's industrial school was reformed and an important freeway was opened, the Big Thompson Highway . As a result of the economic recovery after the Great Depression , which hit not only Colorado in the early 1930s, more jobs were now also being created in Colorado. In 1937, eavesdropping devices were discovered in the governor's office. An investigation found that three people had wiretapped the governor. These were later charged and convicted. Ammons himself was not involved in the matter. Nevertheless, this scandal cost him re-election in 1938. So he had to resign on January 10, 1939 from his office.

After the end of his term of office, he was a member of an army committee that discussed officer appointments. He was also active in the military administration of the island of Guam . Otherwise he also practiced the profession of lawyer. Teller Ammons died in January 1972. He was married to Esther Daves with whom he had one child.
