August William "Bill" Ritter Jr. (* 6. September 1956 in Denver , Colorado ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and former Governor of the State of Colorado.

Ritter comes from an extended family, he was the sixth of twelve children. He has been married since 1984 and has four children with his wife Jeannie. Prior to his candidacy for governor, Ritter was a longtime district attorney for Denver County .

In May 2006, Ritter was nominated by his party as a candidate for governor at the Colorado Democratic Convention . As a candidate for the post of Deputy Governor was Barbara O'Brien nominated. On November 7, 2006, he won the election ; his defeated Republican opponent was Bob Beauprez . Ritter became the first Colorado-born governor of the state in 31 years.

In 2010, Ritter did not stand for re-election after a four-year term. He was succeeded by John Hickenlooper , the Democratic Mayor of Denver.
