Elbert Lee Trinkle (born March 12, 1876 in Wytheville , Wythe County , Virginia , †  November 25, 1939 in Richmond , Virginia) was an American politician and governor of the state of Virginia from 1922 to 1926 .

Early years

Elbert Trinkle came from a prominent Virginia family. He graduated from the Wytheville Military Academy and then studied until 1895 at Hampden-Sydney College . In 1898 he graduated from the University of Virginia with a law exam . He then began working as a lawyer in Wytheville. He was also involved in agriculture with his brothers. Trinkle was also a co-founder of Shenandoah Life Insurance Company , of which he was vice president from 1916 to 1933. From 1933 until his death he was president of this society.

Political advancement and governor of Virginia

Elbert Trinkle was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1913 and 1921 he was a member of the Virginia Senate . In 1921 he was elected governor of his state. Trinkle began his four-year term on February 1, 1922. During this time he worked on improving the prison system. With the increase in automobile traffic, the roads in Virginia were expanded. The school system has also been improved. For example, the curricula were optimized and summer courses were offered. Since Trinkle used the money sparingly in terms of budgetary policy, these projects were largely financed through tax increases.

Another résumé

After the end of his governorship on February 1, 1926, Trinkle returned to work as a lawyer. But he also held other offices. From 1930 until his death he was a member of the Virginia Board of Education. He was President of the Society for the Care of Southwest Virginia Children's Homes and was a curator of Hampden-Sydney College for four years. Elbert Trinkle died on November 25, 1939 in Richmond. He was married to Helen Ball Sexton, with whom he had four children.
