John Rutherfoord

John Rutherfoord (born December 8, 1792 in Richmond , Virginia , † August 3, 1866 ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Virginia from 1841 to 1842 .

Career

John Rutherfoord first attended Princeton University . He then studied law. He later became president of the Mutual Assurance Society , the first insurance company in Virginia. From 1826 to 1834 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives . From 1839 to 1841 he was a member of the Virginia Council of State , now the Senate of Virginia , and chaired it in 1841. In this capacity he succeeded Governor John M. Patton , who had taken over the office from the resigned Thomas Walker Gilmer and held it for twelve days. Rutherfoord held the office of governor of Virginia from March 31, 1841 to March 31, 1842 provisional. Then through January 1, 1843 , John Munford Gregory ended Gilmer's tenure. John Rutherfoord was a member of the Whig Party . After the end of his governorship, he retired into private life and died on August 3, 1866. He had one child with his wife, Anne Coles.
