Frederick William Mackey Holliday (born February 22, 1828 in Winchester , Virginia , † May 29, 1899 ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Virginia from 1878 to 1882 . He also represented his state in the Confederate Congress .

Early years

Frederick Holliday attended Yale University until 1847 after the Winchester Academy . There he received his doctorate in philosophy and politics. He then studied law at the University of Virginia Law School. He then became a district attorney for Frederick County .

Holliday in the American Civil War

Holliday was a supporter of the Confederation and joined their army when the civil war broke out . He became a colonel in an infantry unit from Virginia, which was subordinate to the so-called Stonewall Brigade. During the war, he lost his right arm in the Battle of Cedar Mountain . As a result, he had to give up military service on March 1, 1864. He was then elected to the House of Representatives of the 2nd Confederate Congress, in which he remained until the end of the war.

Political career

After the war, Holliday first worked as a lawyer. In 1876 he represented Virginia at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition . In 1877 he was elected as the Democratic Party candidate for the new governor of his state. He held this office between January 1, 1878 and January 1, 1882. As soon as he was inaugurated, he broke with the tradition of the modest induction ceremonies that were common in Virginia: there were parades, bands, gun salutes and an inaugural address in front of tens of thousands of listeners. His following term of office was unspectacular and without any special incidents.

Another résumé

After the end of his term of office, he went on a world tour on which he visited many nations. He no longer held any political office. Frederick Holliday was married twice. He died on May 29, 1899 and was buried in Winchester.
