Beverley Randolph

Beverley Randolph (born September 11, 1765 on Turkey Island in Henrico County , Colony of Virginia , † February 7, 1797 in Cumberland County , Virginia ) was an American politician and governor of Virginia from 1788 to 1791 .

Beverley Randolph was the son of Peter and Lucy (nee Bolling) Randolph. He studied at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg and married Martha Cocke in 1775. He served in the militia during the War of Independence . He was a member of the Virginia Assembly and from 1777 to 1780 a member of the House of Delegates . Randolph was elected governor of Virginia in 1788. He was the first governor since Virginia became a state of the United States , and served until January 1, 1791, after being confirmed twice by the state legislature . During this time, Kentucky split off from Virginia as an independent state.

Beverley Randolph died on his farm near Green Creek , Cumberland County and was buried in Westview Cemetery.
