The Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (A&M) is a state university in Normal near Huntsville, Alabama, in the US state of Alabama . 6000 students are currently enrolled here. It belongs to the group of the Historic African American Colleges and Universities .
history
Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University was founded in 1875 as the State Normal School and University for the Education of the Colored Teachers and Students for African American students. 1878 it was renamed the State Normal and Industrial School , 1890 in State Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes , 1919 in State Agricultural and Mechanical Institute for Negroes and 1948 in State Agricultural and Mechanical Institute for Negroes . It was only given its current name in 1969 .
The library was founded in 1904 with funds from the Carnegie Foundation .

The A&M sports teams are the Bulldogs . The college is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference .
