University of North Alabama
The University of North Alabama is a state university in Florence in the US state of Alabama . 7,457 students are currently enrolled here.
history
In 1830, LaGrange College was founded at Leighton . In 1854 the college was moved to Florence and renamed Florence Wesleyan University . The campus in LaGrange was destroyed by Union troops in the civil war in 1863. Women have been admitted since 1874, but it wasn't until 1879 that the first female student enrolled. After several name changes, the university was given its current name in 1974.

The library ( Collier Library ) was named after CB Collier, Chancellor of Florence State Teacher's College from 1918 to 1946. It has an inventory of 350,000 media items, including the estate of WC Handy .

The University of North Alabama sports teams are the Lions . The university is a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference .
