Aurora is a small town in the Bergrivier municipality , West Coast District , Western Cape Province in South Africa . It is located about 180 kilometers north of Cape Town in the Sandveld , at the foot of the Piketberg Mountains. The city has 578 inhabitants (as of 2011).
history
Aurora was originally founded as a church so that people in the area would not have to walk long distances to worship. In 1866 the first building was built on the Rietvlei farm . The current church was completed in 1908, the first pastor was Reverend CR Ferreira, a former prisoner of war in Ceylon . He named his daughter Ceylonia Aurora (from Latin aurora , "dawn"). The later small town was named after her.

Due to the location between the sandy plain and the around 1,000 meter high mountains, the range of vegetation surrounding the city is large: Proteacaeae (such as Aulax pallasia , Leucadendron discolor , Ericaceae , Restionaceae , Kniphofia , Aristea , Watsonia , Dilatris , Metalasia , succulents and xerophytes ) are found here in large numbers.
