Timothy James "Tim" Pawlenty (* 27. November 1960 in St. Paul , Minnesota ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He served as governor of the state of Minnesota from January 6, 2003 to January 3, 2011 .

biography

After studying law at the University of Minnesota , Pawlenty was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1994. He originally planned to run for the US Senate in 2002 , but at the request of Vice President Dick Cheney , he let his party colleague Norm Coleman go first. However, he made the decision to run for governor instead. In a close election Pawlenty was able to prevail against his opponents Roger Moe and Tim Penny and was thus on January 6, 2003 the 39th governor of Minnesota . In 2006 he won the gubernatorial elections by less than 23,000 votes over the Democratic candidate Mike Hatch .

In June 2009, he announced that he would not run again for governor in the 2010 election. There has been speculation in the media that he is aiming to run for the 2012 presidential election instead , but Pawlenty says he has not yet made a decision about his future. On January 3, 2011, he handed over the governorship to the Democrat Mark Dayton , who had prevailed in the election against the Republican candidate Tom Emmer .

On March 21, 2011, he confirmed his candidacy for the 2012 presidential election on YouTube. On May 23, he announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination, but withdrew it on August 14.

On April 5, 2018, Pawlenty announced that he would run for the governorship of Minnesota again in the November 2018 election. But he was defeated in the party primary against Jeff Johnson , a local politician from Hennepin County , who, unlike Pawlenty, was considered a supporter of President Trump . Pawlenty then announced his retirement from active politics.
