John Anderson (1964)

John Anderson Jr. (born May 8, 1917 in Olathe , Kansas , † September 15, 2014 there ) was an American politician . He was the 36th governor of the state of Kansas between 1961 and 1965  .

Early years

Anderson attended Olathe High School , Kansas State University and the University of Kansas until 1935 . There he passed his law exam in 1943. Due to health problems, he was out of the question for military service during World War II. Instead, he served on the staff of Federal Judge Walter A. Huxman . In 1946 he opened a private law firm in Olathe. He began his political ascent in 1947. That year he was elected District Attorney for Johnson County . He held this office for six years before becoming a member of the State Senate between 1953 and 1956 . Between 1956 and 1961 he was Attorney General of Kansas. In 1960 he was nominated by his Republican Party as a candidate for gubernatorial elections and then elected to office by Kansas voters against incumbent George Docking .

Kansas Governor

On January 9, 1961, John Anderson was inducted into his new office. After re-election in 1962, he was able to serve as governor for a total of four years until January 11, 1965. During this time, the Kansas pardon system was reformed. In the health care field, a combined hospital emerged that was open to both ordinary patients and the mentally handicapped. At that time, the school system was also restructured and the school districts redistributed. The welfare system was improved and the expansion of the motorway pushed ahead. The public service pension system has also improved. Finally, the administration itself was reorganized. Anderson was also the first Kansas governor to live in the new gubernatorial building called the Cedar Crest. In 1964 he decided not to run again.

Another résumé

After his tenure ended in 1965, Anderson returned to the Olathe bar. At the same time he worked as a lawyer for the motorway administration. He was also director of the Citizens Conference of Kansas from 1965 to 1972 . In 1972 he ran again for the nomination of his party for the office of governor, but was already stuck in the primaries. Anderson has also been nominated, but not appointed, for judge posts in federal courts several times. In the meantime John Anderson has retired to Olathe. Anderson lived there until his death in September 2014.

Honors

Johnson County's K-10 state road was named after him in his honor.
