Epifanio Méndez Fleitas (* 1917 in San Pedro del Paraná, Paraguay , † November 22, 1985 in Buenos Aires ) was a Paraguayan politician , musician and writer .

life and work

Epifanio Méndez Fleitas joined the Colorado Party in 1941 . He supported the Democrático wing of Federico Chaves and became Alfredo Stroessner's most important rival . On February 26, 1949 he was involved with Stroessner in the coup against President Raimundo Rolón and became chief of police. In 1952 he became president of the central bank.

His open sympathy for the politics of Juan Perón in Argentina led to an exile in his hometown. By the military uprising from May 3rd to 8th 1954 President Chaves was overthrown, Stroessner and Méndez Fleitas became the leaders of an alliance of Colorado party and military . The fall of Perón in September 1955 weakened the position of Méndez Fleitas, and on December 23, 1955, he had to resign from his position as President of the Central Bank.

In January 1956 he traveled to Spain on a diplomatic mission , but on his return in March he was refused entry to Paraguay. He went into exile in Uruguay , where he was one of the founders of the Movimiento Popular Colorado (MOPOCO) in 1959. He later broke away from MOPOCO and founded the Asociacion Nacional Republicana en el Exilio y la Resistencia in 1973 . In his writings he repeatedly attacked President Stroessner in the sharpest possible way. In 1978, under pressure from the Argentine government, he was expelled from Uruguay and went to the USA. In June 1984 he was allowed to enter Argentina. He died on November 22, 1985 in Buenos Aires .
