Federico Chaves

Federico Chaves Careaga (born February 15, 1882 in Paraguarí , † April 24, 1978 in Asunción ) was a Paraguayan politician and soldier who was President of Paraguay from September 11, 1949 to May 5, 1954. He was a member of the Colorado Party .

Life

He was born on February 15, 1882 as the son of the Portuguese Federico Chaves and his Paraguayan wife Felicia Caraega in Paraguarí and later received his doctorate .

Chaves was longtime chairman of the Colorado Party. When his party entered a coalition government, he became a Supreme Court judge. Then Chaves was Foreign Minister of Paraguay. At the request of the Colorado Party, his predecessor resigned and Chaves was sworn in as his successor on September 10, 1949 and ruled as Provisional President from September 11, 1949 to August 15, 1953. After his election, he was constitutional president from August 15, 1953. When Chaves armed the National Police to strengthen his regime, the Paraguayan armed forces led by General Alfredo Stroessner staged a coup . On May 5, the Chaves presidency ended.

Chaves died of natural causes in Asunción in 1978. He received a state funeral, Stroessner attended the funeral service.
