Tomás Romero Pereira ( October 4, 1886 - August 12, 1982 ) was President of Paraguay from May 8, 1954 to August 15, 1954 .

Life

A scholarship enabled Tomás Romero Pereira to attend the military academy in Buenos Aires. He then studied architecture at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata in Buenos Aires (until 1914); a postgraduate course in Paris followed. As a result, he became his country's ambassador to France. After his return to Paraguay, he worked as an architect in Asunción and headed the local office for public buildings. At the same time he was politically active, at times as chairman of the Colorado Party . He served as an officer during the Chaco War .

Romero came to power as a result of a military coup led by Alfredo Stroessner . The coup began on May 4, 1954 and lasted three days. Romero was a compromise candidate between the coup plotters and the Colorado party, which officially held power. He took office on May 8, 1954. On July 11, 1954, an election took place with Alfredo Stroessner as the only candidate. On August 15, 1954, Romero handed over his office to Stroessner, after which he held further offices as senator and minister.

The Tomás Romero Pereira district in southeast Paraguay is named after the former president.
