Hugh Sleight Walsh
Hugh Sleight Walsh (born November 10, 1810 in Orange County , New York , † April 23, 1877 in Grantville , Kansas ) was an American politician . He was governor of the Kansas Territory in 1858 .
Career
Hugh Walsh attended local schools in his home country. He came to the Kansas Territory via Alabama in 1857. There he became private secretary to Governors Frederick Perry Stanton and James William Denver . In May 1858 he became Secretary of State in the area.
After the resignation of Denver he had to take over the office of governor until the arrival of his successor Samuel Medary . That was about two months. After that he was State Secretary again until 1860. His time in Kansas wasn't easy. In the run-up to the civil war , both parties fought over the approval of slavery in the area. This led to militant violence . Kansas was at war long before the Civil War officially broke out. In Kansas, Walsh was accused of being the federal government's stooge in Washington and of not caring about the interests of the territory. In June 1860 he resigned from the office of State Secretary.
After his political activities ended, he became a farmer in Grantville, Jefferson County, together with his son. He died there in 1877.
