Jonathan McMillan Davis (born April 27, 1871 in Bourbon County , Kansas , † June 27, 1943 ibid) was an American politician and from 1923 to 1925 the 22nd governor of the state of Kansas.

Early years and political advancement

Jonathan Davis attended the University of Kansas and the University of Nebraska . After the death of his father, he had to quit his studies for financial reasons. He was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in 1900, 1908 and 1910, respectively . In 1912 he made the leap into the State Senate and in 1922 he was nominated by the Democratic Party as a candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial elections.

Kansas Governor

After his victory over Republican WY Morgan, Davis began his two-year term on January 8, 1923. He campaigned for the expansion of the road network and a tax cut. Veteran's pensions were increased and the University of Kansas Chancellor was dismissed. In the school sector, compulsory schooling was extended to at least eight months a year. Immediately after his tenure ended, Davis was charged with bribery but acquitted in court. In the further course he ran for public offices several times without success. He died in June 1943 and was buried in Bronson . Jonathan Davis was married to Mary E. Raymond; the couple had three children.
