James Madison Harvey

James Madison Harvey (born September 21, 1833 in Monroe County , Virginia , † April 15, 1894 in Riley County , Kansas ) was an American politician and from 1869 to 1873 the fifth governor of the state of Kansas.

Early years and political advancement

Born in what is now West Virginia , James Harvey attended schools in Illinois , Iowa and Indiana in his youth because his parents moved several times . He was particularly interested in engineering and land surveying. In 1859 he came to the Kansas Territory and settled in Riley County . During the Civil War he was a captain in an infantry unit. In 1865 Republican Harvey was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives, where he remained for a year. Between 1867 and 1868 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1868, Harvey was nominated by his party as a candidate for gubernatorial elections and then elected to that office by the electorate.

Kansas Governor

Harvey took up his new office on January 11, 1869. After being re-elected in 1870, he was able to serve as governor for a total of four years. He took care of the improvement of the infrastructure of his state, with the expansion of the roads and paths in the foreground. But the rail link from Kansas to Denver in Colorado was also completed. At that time, a Board of Agriculture was set up and Freedman University was founded. In the country itself, the boundaries of the individual counties were finally determined and new cities were founded - a sign of population growth. The judicial districts were also reallocated. At that time, the construction of the Capitol in the capital Topeka began. Finally, some anti-corruption laws were passed.

Further life

A year after his term ended, Harvey was elected to the US Senate . There he remained from 1874 to 1877. After the end of his time in Congress , Harvey retired from politics and devoted himself to his private business in Kansas. However, he still worked a few second as a surveyor for the federal government in the western territories. James Harvey died in 1894. He was married to Charlotte Richardson Cutter. They had nine children together.
