Jerry Moran (born May 29, 1954 in Great Bend , Barton County , Kansas ) is an American politician . From 1997 to 2011 he represented the first constituency of the state of Kansas in the US House of Representatives . He has been a member of the United States Senate for Kansas since 2011 .

Career

Jerry Moran attended Plainville High School and then until 1976 the University of Kansas at Lawrence . After studying law at the same university and doing a short time in banking, he began practicing as a lawyer in Hays . From 1982 to 1985, he served as the special attorney for the Attorney General of Kansas. Between 1987 and 1995 he served as the assistant district attorney in Rooks County . From 1990 to 1995 he also served on the board of directors of the University of Kansas law school. He was also a member of the board of directors of the state's Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 1996 to 1997.

Politically, Moran joined the Republican Party . Between 1989 and 1997 he was a member of the Kansas Senate . From 1993 to 1995 he was its vice-president; from 1995 to 1997 he led the Republican parliamentary group. In the 1996 congressional election, Moran was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first district of Kansas . There he took over from Pat Roberts on January 3, 1997 . After he was confirmed in each of the following elections, he represented his constituency in Congress until January 3, 2011 .

Moran has served on the Agriculture Committee, the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and the War Veterans Committee. In all three committees he was represented in several sub-committees. Moran is considered conservative; he is supported by groups such as the National Rifle Association , the National Right to Life Committee, and the American Conservative Union . The politician, who is married to Robba Moran, was nominated in August 2010 as a Republican candidate for the election to the US Senate , where he succeeded Sam Brownback . In the primary he won against Todd Tiahrt , another incumbent Congressman. Since January 3, 2011, he has served on the United States Senate for Kansas. Since he was confirmed in office in 2016, he will also represent his state in the US Senate for the next six years. His new term runs until January 3, 2023.
