Case Broderick (born September 23, 1839 in Marion , Indiana , † April 1, 1920 in Holton , Kansas ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1899 he represented the first constituency of the state of Kansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Case Broderick attended public schools in his home country. In 1858 he moved to Jackson County in what was then the Kansas Territory , where he worked in agriculture. During the Civil War he was a Union soldier in a unit from Kansas from 1862 to 1865. After the war he studied law, and after being admitted to the bar in 1870, he began working in his new profession in Holton.

Broderick was a member of the Republican Party . He served as Mayor of Holton from 1874 to 1875. He then served as Jackson County District Attorney from 1876 to 1880. Broderick was a member of the Kansas Senate between 1880 and 1884 . In 1884 he was appointed Associate Justice of the Idaho Territory Supreme Court in Boise by President Chester A. Arthur . Broderick held this office until 1888, when he returned to Holton, where he practiced as a lawyer again.

In 1890, Broderick was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the First District of Kansas , where he succeeded Edmund Morrill on March 4, 1891 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1899 . In 1898 he was no longer nominated by his party for another term. After the end of his time in Congress, Broderick initially worked as a lawyer again. He later retired from this job and became a farmer and rancher. He died on April 1, 1920 in Holton, where he was also buried.

Case Broderick was the cousin of David C. Broderick (1820-1859), who represented the State of California in the US Senate from 1857 to 1859 . Another cousin was Andrew Kennedy (1810-1857), who was a member of the US House of Representatives for Indiana between 1841 and 1847.
