Denver David Hargis (born July 22, 1921 in Key West , Florida , † March 16, 1989 in Sarasota , Florida) was an American politician .

In 1922 Hargis moved to Coffeyville , Kansas with his parents . During World War II , he served in the United States Navy from January 1941 to October 1943 . He then studied at Washburn University in Topeka , where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1946 and then attended the University's Law Department , where he finally received his Bachelor of Laws in 1948 . Hargis was admitted to the bar that same year and began practicing in Coffeyville. From 1953 to 1958 he was mayor of the city. He was appointed to the Arkansas River Basin Committee by Governor George Docking in 1956 , to which he was a member until 1959. At the same time, Hargis tried unsuccessfully to be elected to the 85th Congress . He succeeded only two years later, when he was elected as a Democrat in the 86th Congress in 1958 and represented the state of Kansas in the US House of Representatives from January 3, 1959 to January 3, 1961 . In the elections to the 87th Congress , he was unable to defend his mandate. During his time as an MP, Hargis was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1960 .

He later worked as a consultant in the Ministry of Defense (1961–1962) and the Ministry of Commerce (1962–1966). In the decades that followed, Hargis worked in the insurance industry, managing and later owner of several insurance companies in Florida. In 1985 he retired. Hargis last lived in Sarasota, Florida.
