Edward H. Funston

Edward Hogue Funston (born September 16, 1836 in New Carlisle , Ohio , † September 10, 1911 in Iola , Kansas ) was an American politician . Between 1884 and 1894 he represented the state of Kansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Funston attended his homeland public schools and Marietta College . He then worked as a teacher himself for some time. During the Civil War he was an officer in the Union Army. He was involved in the campaigns along the Mississippi . After the war, he settled on a farm in Allen County , Kansas, in 1867 .

Funston was a member of the Republican Party . From 1873 to 1876 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Kansas , in 1875 he was its president. Between 1880 and 1884 Funston also sat on the State Senate , of which he was acting president in 1880. After the death of Congressman Dudley C. Haskell , Funston was elected his successor in Congress . He took up this mandate on March 21, 1884. After four re-elections, he was initially able to remain in Congress until March 3, 1893. In the elections of 1892 he was re-elected against the Democrat Horace Ladd Moore . This enabled him to begin another legislative term in Congress on March 4, 1893. Moore appealed against the election result. When this was granted, Funston had to cede his mandate to Moore on August 2, 1894. In Congress, Funston was chairman of the Agriculture Committee from 1889 to 1891.

After his political activities in the federal capital ended, Funston returned to his private agricultural affairs on his farm in Kansas. He died in Iola in September 1911 and was buried there. He was the father of the future major general and hero of the Filipino-American War, Frederick N. Funston .
