Career

In 1881, William Ayres and his parents moved to Sedgwick County , Kansas. There he attended public schools and later Garfield University , now Friends University , in Wichita . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1893, Ayres began practicing his new profession in Wichita. Between 1897 and 1901 he was a record clerk at the Kansas State Court of Appeals and from 1906 to 1910 he was a district attorney in Sedgwick County.

Politically, Ayres was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1914 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington as their candidate in the eighth district of Kansas. There he succeeded the Republican Victor Murdock on March 4, 1915 . After two re-elections in 1916 and 1918, he was able to complete three consecutive terms in Congress until March 3, 1921 . In the 1920 elections he was defeated by Republican Richard Ely Bird . Two years later, Ayers was re-elected to the House of Representatives. This enabled him to win his mandate back from Bird. Since he was confirmed in the following elections, he was able to represent the eighth constituency in Congress until it was dissolved (March 4, 1923 to March 3, 1933).

In the elections of 1932 Ayres ran after the dissolution of the eighth district in the fifth electoral district. After his victory, he took over on March 4, 1933 the seat of MPs held by the Republican James G. Strong . He only exercised this mandate until August 22, 1934. On that day he resigned because he had been appointed to the Federal Trade Commission. William Ayres remained a member of this commission until his death in 1952. He was buried in Wichita.
