Robert Russell "Bob" Whittaker (born September 18, 1939 in Eureka , Greenwood County , Kansas ) is an American politician . Between 1979 and 1991 he represented the fifth constituency of the state of Kansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Whittaker attended the public schools in Greenwood County and studied between 1957 and 1959 at the University of Kansas and then at Emporia State College . He then studied optics at the Illinois College of Optometry until 1962 . Then he started working as an ophthalmologist. In 1973 Whittaker became director of the Kansas Low Vision Eye Clinic. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . He served on the City Planning Committee in his home district from 1970 to 1974 and was a member of the Kansas House of Representatives from 1974 to 1977 .

In 1978 Whittaker was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth district of Kansas . There he took over from Joe Skubitz on January 3, 1979 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1991 . In 1990 he renounced another candidacy. Whittaker did not hold any other political office after his tenure in Congress. Today he lives in Augusta .
