John R. Connelly, 1914

John Robert Connelly (born February 27, 1870 in Mount Sterling , Illinois , † September 9, 1940 in Concordia , Kansas ) was an American politician . Between 1913 and 1919 he represented the sixth constituency of the state of Kansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1883, John Connelly came with his parents to Thayer County , Nebraska , where he attended public schools. He then studied at Salina Normal University in Salina (Kansas). From 1888 Connelly was in Thomas County , Kansas, where he worked as a teacher. Between 1894 and 1898 he was a school councilor in Thomas County; from 1897 to 1919 he was the owner and editor of the newspaper "Colby Free Press".

Connelly was a member of the Democratic Party , whose Democratic National Conventions he attended as a delegate in 1908, 1920 and 1928. He was mayor and councilor in Colby . In 1908 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress . In the 1912 congressional elections, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth district of Kansas . There he took over on March 4, 1913, succeeding Republican Isaac D. Young . After two re-elections, Connelly was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until March 3, 1919. During this time the United States took part in the First World War . On January 16, 1919, shortly before the end of the legislative period, the 18th amendment to the Constitution was passed in Congress, which introduced alcohol prohibition .

In the 1918 election, Connelly was defeated by Republican Hays B. White . After leaving Congress, he resumed his previous activities. In 1924 he ran unsuccessfully to return to the US House of Representatives. At that time he was also involved in the real estate business in Colby. John Connelly died in Concordia in September 1940 and was buried in Colby.
