Stephen A. Cobb
Stephen Alonzo Cobb (born June 17, 1833 in Madison , Maine , † August 24, 1878 in Kansas City , Kansas ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the second constituency of the state of Kansas in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Stephen Cobb attended public schools in his home country. In 1850 he moved to Minnesota with his father . There he learned some foreign languages. Until 1854 Cobb attended Beloit College in Wisconsin . After further studies at Brown University in Providence ( Rhode Island ), which he graduated in 1858, he settled in Wyandotte , which is now part of Kansas City. There he began to work as a lawyer. During the Civil War , Cobb joined the Union Army in 1862, where he was qualified as a brevet major.
Cobb was a member of the Republican Party . In 1862, before his military service, he was mayor of Wyandotte and a member of the Kansas Senate . In 1868 he was again mayor of Wyandotte and in 1869 and 1870 again state senator. In 1872 he was an MP and President in the Kansas House of Representatives . In the congressional elections of the same year, which were held nationwide, he was elected as his party's candidate for the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he completed a legislative period between March 4, 1873 and March 3, 1875. In the elections of 1874 he was defeated by John R. Goodin of the Democratic Party .
After leaving Congress , Stephen Cobb has held no other political offices. He died in August 1878 and was buried in Kansas City.
