Jeremiah "Jerry" Simpson (born March 31, 1842 on Prince Edward Island , Canada , †  October 23, 1905 in Wichita , Kansas ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1895 and again from 1897 to 1899 he represented the seventh constituency of the state of Kansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1848, Simpson and his parents moved from his home in Canada to Oneida County, New York State . There he attended public schools. Between 1856 and 1879 he was at times inland navigation and dealt with matters relating to shipping. During the Civil War he was a soldier in an infantry regiment from Illinois . In 1878, Simpson moved to Barber County , Kansas, where he settled near Medicine Lodge . There he dealt with agricultural matters and especially with livestock. During this time his political activity began. He twice ran unsuccessfully as an independent candidate for the Kansas House of Representatives . Then he joined the populist party that grew out of the farmers' movement .

In 1890 Simpson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the Seventh District of Kansas, whose MPs were still state-wide elected at the time . There he succeeded the Republican Samuel R. Peters on March 3, 1891 . After being re-elected in 1892, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1895 . In 1894 he was defeated by Republican Chester I. Long in elections, which were now held by constituency . Two years later, in 1896, Simpson was then re-elected to Congress and was able to resume his previous mandate. Since he lost again to Long in the elections of 1898, he could only remain one term in Congress between March 4, 1897 and March 3, 1899, which was determined by the events of the Spanish-American War . After the end of his political activity, Simpson returned to his private affairs. He died in Wichita in October 1905. Jerry Simpson was married to Jane Simpson (1849-1933).
