The EMD F2 series was a diesel locomotive series from the US manufacturer Electro Motive Division (EMD). It can be viewed as a transition type between the EMD FT and the EMD F3 .

Development history

With the looming victory of the United States in World War II , the production restrictions imposed by the US warboard were gradually relaxed. In August 1945, EMD presented the railway companies with a four-part demonstration unit of the E2 series, the successor to the EMD FT. This was equipped with a further developed diesel engine of the EMD 567 B series and made 1 100 KW (1 500 SAE-PS ). EMD offered the railway companies this unit for test drives . Delivery problems with the new type D12 generator meant that EMD delivered the machines with the new EMD 567B motor, but the old D8 generator from the EMD FT, for a transitional period . In order to avoid overloading the generator, the engine output had to be throttled to 1,000 kW (1,350 SAE PS). When the series version of the D12 was available at the end of 1946, production of the EMD F2 was discontinued after only 5 months in December 1946 in favor of the EMD F3.

technology

The series EMD FT worked, like almost all locomotives in North America , after the diesel-electric principle. The diesel engine drives a generator, which in turn supplies the traction motors with electrical energy. A torque conversion is achieved via this intermediate step .

The locomotive body of the vehicles corresponded to the carbody design known from the E series and the EMD FT. The side walls provided a self-supporting casing for all the units inside. A walkway to the right and left of the center of the vehicle made it possible to carry out maintenance work while driving.

The design of the bulldog nose was adopted from the FT. Compared to the previous model, the locomotives only have two exhausts.
