Clifford Ragsdale Hope (born June 9, 1893 in Birmingham , Iowa , † May 16, 1970 in Garden City , Kansas ) was an American politician . Between 1927 and 1957 he represented the state of Kansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Clifford Hope attended the public schools in his home country and then Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln . After studying law at Washburn Law School in Topeka, Kansas, he was admitted to the bar in 1917. During the First World War he served as a lieutenant in the US Army in France from 1917 to 1919 . On his return he began practicing as a lawyer in Garden City (Kansas) in 1919.

Politically, Hope was a member of the Republican Party . From 1921 to 1927 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Kansas ; since 1925 he was its president. In 1926 Hope was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the Seventh Constituency of Kansas , where he succeeded Jasper N. Tincher on March 4, 1927 . After a few re-elections, he represented his district in Congress until it was dissolved on January 3, 1943 . He then ran for the fifth electoral district and replaced the Democrat John Mills Houston in Congress after his election victory . Since he was confirmed in each of the following elections, Hope could complete a total of 15 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1957. The Great Depression , World War II , Korean War and the beginning of the Cold War took place during this period . Hope was from 1947 to 1949 and again between 1953 and 1955 chairman of the Agriculture Committee. In 1956 he renounced another candidacy.

After serving in Congress, Clifford Hope served as President of Great Plains Wheat Inc. in Garden City from 1959 to 1963 . He also died in this city in 1970.
