The Secret Value of Daydreaming is the second album by the singer Julian Lennon . It was released in March 1986 by Atlantic Records in the USA and Canada and by Charisma / Virgin Records worldwide.

Emergence

After Julian Lennon had released his debut album Valotte in 1984 , which contained an international hit with Too Late For Goodbyes , he first went on tour. Upon his return, the record company urged him to record another album:

“I had just finished my first tour and the record company said, okay, you had a hit, go to the studio, we already booked . And I replied, you have to give me some time to be creative, please , but all I got to hear was don't be silly! . So I obeyed and in my opinion it was a waste of time and money. "

In retrospect, Lennon found that he was “forced to make the second record. I wasn't happy with the record at all. "

The black and white cover of the album shows Lennon's face in front and side views. Smoke can be seen around him. The photo is from Timothy White . On the inner sleeve of the record, Lennon thanks Phil Collins, among others, for a crash course in handwriting - the handwritten title and name of Lennon's album resembles the handwritten labels on many of Collins' solo albums - as well as his mother, Cynthia Lennon . The thank you list ends with the words "And to my Father ...".

criticism

The youth magazine Bravo presented The Secret Value of Daydreaming as "LP-Der Woche" and found that Lennon had managed to "shake off the mighty shadow of his [father]" with his second LP. Lennon's compositions are "really strong, sensitive ... and tricky ...". Musikexpress saw Lennon's second album as "more of a conscious departure than a further development of the [acoustic, John Lennon-like] direction".

Stephen Thomas Erlewine from allmusic.com found that just a handful of tracks including Stick Around are actually more than smooth, perfectly produced material. Rolling Stone criticized the abstract, often meaningless song lyrics, which mostly deal with relationship issues.
