He began his political career as a member of the Republican Party in 1970 when he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives . He stayed there until 1974. That year he unsuccessfully applied for the office of lieutenant governor . A year later he became an advisor to Governor James Burrows Edwards . Between 1976 and 1978 he was a member of the South Carolina Senate . In 1979 Campbell was elected to the US House of Representatives. He stayed there until 1987. Governor of south carolina

For the gubernatorial elections of 1986 he was chosen by his Republican Party as the top candidate. He won the elections in November of this year with 51% of the vote against his Democratic opponent Michael R. Daniel , who got 47.9%. After the constitution changed under his predecessor Richard Riley , he was allowed to run again four years later. This time he won more clearly with 69.5% of the vote against Theo Mitchell . During his tenure, he had to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo , which in September 1989 caused great damage in the country. In 1988, the governor named Jean H. Toal, the first woman to appear in the South Carolina Supreme Court.

In 1990, there were some inconsistencies in South Carolina public life. For one thing, the President of the University of South Carolina, James B. Holderman, had to resign from office for wasting money. At the same time, the public prosecutor's office was investigating some of the country's politicians for bribery and drug abuse. At the end of the investigation, there were 27 convictions. This led to a general loss of confidence among citizens in politics. In August 1990, the state's National Guard was mobilized in support of the US war effort in the first Iraq war. Governor Campbell also advocated the settlement of foreign corporations in South Carolina. He also supported the construction of the first American BMW plant, which was built in Greer . Otherwise it is worth noting that he received Pope John Paul II in Columbia in 1987 . In both 1980 and 1984 Campbell supported Ronald Reagan's election campaigns . Carroll Campbell has also served on various joint boards of governors. After his term in office he was constitutionally prohibited from running again, so he resigned from his office on January 11, 1995.

Retirement

Between 1995 and 2001 he was Chairman of the American Council of Life Insurers in Washington . In October 2001, he announced that he had Alzheimer's disease. He died of a heart attack in December 2005. Carroll Campbell was married to Iris Faye Rhodes. The couple had two children.
