Thomas Bothwell Jeter

Thomas Bothwell Jeter (born October 13, 1827 in Santuc , Union County , South Carolina , † May 20, 1883 ) was an American politician and 1880 Governor of South Carolina.

Early years and political career

Thomas Jeter graduated from South Carolina College in 1846, later the University of South Carolina . After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1848 . He subsequently worked as a lawyer, but was also president of the Spartanburg and Union Railroad railroad company for more than a decade . Jeter's political career began in 1856 when he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. During the Civil War he served as a captain in the Army of the Southern States . After the war he worked as a lawyer again. Between 1872 and 1882 he was in his country's Congress, of which he soon became President. In 1878, Governor Wade was named Hampton III. confirmed in office for a further two years. When Hampton resigned from this office in February 1879 to take a seat in the US Congress, the previous Lieutenant Governor William Dunlap Simpson was his successor. As President of the Senate, Jeter was now the second man behind Governor Simpson. On September 1, 1880, Simpson resigned as governor to become Chief Justice in South Carolina. This gave Jeter the post of governor, who was to end the term of office begun by his two predecessors by November 30, 1880. In these three months, however, he was unable to set any new political accents for South Carolina.

Retirement

Jeter remained in his country's Senate until 1882 . He was then a member of the South Carolina Railroad Committee until his death in May 1883. Thomas Jeter was married to Ann Henderson Thompson.
