Early years and political advancement

John Drayton was born near Charleston on the Drayton Hall plantation. He first attended the College of New Jersey , now Princeton University , and then studied law in London . In 1807 he studied at the University of South Carolina, which he co-founded . His political career began in 1792 when he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives . He held his mandate until 1798, when he was elected Lieutenant Governor under Edward Rutledge . After his death in January 1800 Drayton had to take over the office of governor. He first ended the partial term of office of his predecessor and was then elected governor himself for two years in the autumn of 1800. Politically, he was a member of Thomas Jefferson's Democratic Republican Party .

Governor of south carolina

Drayton served two non-contiguous terms. The first phase began on January 23, 1800 after Rutledge's death and lasted until December 1, 1802, during which time the Santee Canal was completed. In 1801, South Carolina College was founded, which later became the University of South Carolina . In addition, the division of South Carolina into different legal districts was realized. The country's constitution did not allow for immediate re-election after the end of a full legislative period. For this reason he could not run for re-election in 1802. Instead, he served in the South Carolina Senate from 1805 to 1808 before being re-elected governor. His new term of office began on December 10, 1808 and ended exactly two years later on December 10, 1810. During this time, he campaigned for the improvement of the school system. In addition, the right to vote was extended to all white men in South Carolina, regardless of status or wealth.

At the same time, the system of slavery became even more firmly anchored. Liberalization of this system was prohibited by law. Meanwhile the booming economy of the state had become dependent on this institution. The most important products such as cotton , rice , sugar and similar agricultural products could only be planted and harvested with the help of slaves. This development continued until the beginning of the civil war .
