James Witherspoon (politician)

James Hervey Witherspoon (born November 20, 1784 in Williamsburg County , South Carolina , †  June 28, 1842 ) was an American politician . Between 1826 and 1828 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

James Witherspoon grew up in Williamsburg County and later moved to Lancaster County . There he worked as a District Ordinary for the administration. He was also a member of the state militia, in which he reached the rank of colonel in 1818. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Republican Party .

In 1826 Witherspoon was elected lieutenant governor of his state by the South Carolina General Assembly on the side of John Taylor . He held this office between December 9, 1826 and December 10, 1828. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . Witherspoon remained politically active even after his time as Lieutenant Governor. At the time of his death, he was running for the United States House of Representatives . He died on June 28, 1842 and was buried in Riverside . His son Isaac (1803-1858) was from 1842 to 1844 also lieutenant governor of South Carolina. Another son, James, was a member of the Confederate House of Representatives.
