Eugene Gary

Eugene Blackburn Gary (born August 22, 1854 in Abbeville , Abbeville County , South Carolina , †  December 10, 1926 in Atlanta , Georgia ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1890 and 1893 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

The places of birth and death of Eugene Gary are given differently in the sources. According to The Political Graveyard , he was born in Abbeville and died in Atlanta. Find A Grave gives Atlanta as his place of birth and Charleston as his place of death. He attended Judge WC Benet's Classical School in Cokesbury and then studied until 1872 at South Carolina College , later the University of South Carolina . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1875, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In 1890, Gary was elected Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina alongside Benjamin Tillman . He held this office between 1890 and 1893. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He resigned from office in 1893 after being appointed judge on the South Carolina Supreme Court . He stayed there until his death on December 10, 1926. From 1912 he was Chief Justice of this court.
