Joshua John Ward

Joshua John Ward (born November 24, 1800 on the Brookgreen Plantation in Georgetown County , South Carolina , †  February 27, 1853 ) was an American politician . Between 1850 and 1852 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

Joshua Ward was born the son of a plantation owner. He later managed several rice plantations in South Carolina. He was the largest slave owner in America. In 1852 he held 1,092 slaves; in 1860 this number among his heirs had even risen to 1,130. In addition to his work as a rice planter, Ward also embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In 1850 he was elected lieutenant governor of his state by the South Carolina General Assembly alongside John Hugh Means . He held this office between December 13, 1850 and December 9, 1852. He was Deputy Governor . Since 1825 Ward was married to Joanna Douglass Hasell, with whom he had ten children. He died on the Brookgreen Plantation on February 27, 1853, less than three months after the end of his tenure as lieutenant governor.
