Ken Ard

James Kenneth "Ken" Ard (born December 18, 1963 in Pamplico , Florence County , South Carolina ) is an American politician . He was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina in 2011 and 2012 .

Career

Ken Ard graduated from Hannah-Pamplico High School and then studied at Wofford College in Spartanburg . He then worked for the family-owned company that manufactured and installed truck bodies. Later he and his brother bought the company from his father. The brothers ran the company together until 2008. Then Ard sold his stake to his brother to devote himself entirely to politics.

He became a member of the Republican Party . In 2004 he was elected to the Florence County Council; In 2009 he became Republican district chairman there. In 2010, Ard was elected Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina, alongside Nikki Haley . He held this office between January 12, 2011 and his resignation on March 9, 2012. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . His resignation came after he was charged with illegally using campaign funds. Overall, he was charged on 92 counts, 69 of which related to campaign monies being spent on his personal needs. In the remaining cases, the money was not used for its intended purpose. He pleaded guilty in seven cases. He was sentenced to five years probation, a fine, and 300 hours of social work.
