Isaac Donnom Witherspoon

Isaac Donnom Witherspoon (born December 3, 1803 in Lancaster County , South Carolina , †  July 30, 1858 in White Sulfur Springs , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1842 and 1844 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

Isaac Witherspoon was the son of James Witherspoon (1784-1842), who was also Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina between 1826 and 1828. His brother James (1810-1865) was a member of the Confederate House of Representatives. He attended South Carolina College , which he left early without a degree. Then he moved to Yorkville . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . From 1836 he was a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina . Later he was a member of the State Senate . He was a member of the South Carolina General Assembly for 20 years . In 1842 he was elected lieutenant governor of his state. But since he was not admitted for reasons that are not handed down, he could not take up this office.

In 1844, Witherspoon was then legally elected lieutenant governor of South Carolina by the state legislature alongside James Henry Hammond . He held this office between December 8, 1842 and December 7, 1844. He was Deputy Governor . After serving as Lieutenant Governor, he returned to practice as a lawyer. He was also still a member of the state parliament. He was a highly respected citizen of his hometown of Yorkville. In 1858 he suffered a stroke. He died on July 30 of that year in White Sulpher Springs, what is now West Virginia , where he was temporarily buried. His remains were later transferred to Yorkville and finally buried there.
