history

Hotel Greenbrier

The hot springs established its function as a bathing resort for the summer months in the first half of the 19th century ( Queen of the Watering Places ).

The place is important for golf history because the Montague family founded Oakhurst Links there in 1884, the oldest golf club in the USA.

During the Second World War, German diplomats were temporarily interned in the Hotel Greenbrier in a very comfortable way (December 1941 - May 1942).

In the years 1958–1961, as part of the expansion of the hotel (the so-called West Virginia Wing), a government bunker was built right next to the luxury hotel in strictest secrecy.
