WW Harllee

William Wallace "WW" Harllee (born July 29, 1812 in Marion County , South Carolina , †  April 29, 1897 in Florence , South Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1860 and 1862 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

Nothing is known about the youth and schooling of W. W. Harllee. He must have studied law because he later served as president of the South Carolina Bar Association, among other things. Whether he practiced as a lawyer is not mentioned in the sources, but it is conceivable. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . He was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives . He was also a member of the state militia, in which he rose to general.

In 1860, Harllee was elected Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina alongside Francis Wilkinson Pickens . He held this office between December 14, 1860 and December 17, 1862. He was Deputy Governor . A few days after taking office, on December 20, 1860, he was one of the signatories of his state's declaration of withdrawal from the Union. His tenure as Lieutenant Governor was marked by the events of the civil war that followed . Harllee was also president of the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad and founder of the city of Florence, named after his daughter. He died there on April 29, 1897.
