List of Lieutenant Governors of South Carolina

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following list shows all the Vice-Governors of the US state of South Carolina ( Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina ) from 1730 to the present. In South Carolina, the lieutenant governor and governor are elected separately and not together as in other states. Therefore, the lieutenant governor may belong to a different political party than the governor.

Royal period (1729–1776)

The office of lieutenant governor was created in 1729 by the British government under the supervision of the Board of Trade . The first lieutenant governor was Thomas Broughton, and he took office on January 1, 1730. Prior to that, the governor appointed a deputy governor to replace him during his absence. There were only three lieutenant governors during the royal period, two of whom were father and son.
