The office of lieutenant governor has existed in the state of Pennsylvania since 1873 when it was created through a constitutional amendment. The lieutenant governor presides over the Pennsylvania Senate as president and replaces the governor in the event of the governor's death or resignation . The term of office is four years; re-election has been possible once since 1968.
