Samuel S. Lewis

Samuel S. Lewis (born February 17, 1874 in York , Pennsylvania , †  January 15, 1959 ) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1943 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Pennsylvania.

Career

After studying law and becoming a lawyer, Samuel Lewis began working in the profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1904 he was a substitute delegate to the Republican National Convention . For some time he worked as a postman in his home country. Between 1921 and 1925 he was State Auditor as the Auditor General of Pennsylvania . He was then from 1925 to 1929 as State Treasurer Treasury Secretary of his state. During the second term of Governor Gifford Pinchot (1931-1935) Lewis served as the head of the authority for the expressways of his state ( Secretary of Highways ). In addition, he was in charge of the infrastructure development for rural areas initiated by the governor.

In 1938, Lewis was elected Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania alongside Arthur Horace James . He held this office between 1939 and 1943. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He later served as Minister for Forestry and Water from 1951 to 1953 under Governor John Sydney Fine . In 1944, 1948 and 1952 he took part as a delegate at the respective Republican National Conventions. He died on January 15, 1959.
