John PS Gobin

John Peter Shindel Gobin (born January 21, 1837 in Sunbury , Northumberland County , Pennsylvania , †  May 1, 1910 in Lebanon , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1903 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Pennsylvania.

Career

John Gobin first completed an apprenticeship in the printing trade. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1861, he began to work in this profession. During the civil war he served in the Union army . He took part in several battles and campaigns and rose to the rank of colonel or brevet brigadier general. Immediately after the war he was a military judge in occupied Charleston , South Carolina . In 1866 he retired from the military and returned to Pennsylvania, where he practiced as a lawyer again. He was also active in the National Guard. Among other things, he led operations against striking miners in the coal mining industry. During the Spanish-American War of 1898 he was Brigadier General in the Volunteer Units. He was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Freemasons veterans organization .

Politically, Gobin was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1885 and 1899 he sat in the Senate of Pennsylvania , as its President Pro Tempore he served from 1891 to 1893. In 1898 he was elected lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania alongside William A. Stone . He held this office between 1899 and 1903. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. He died on May 1, 1910 in Lebanon, where he was also buried.
