John Latta

John Latta (born March 2, 1836 in Westmoreland County , Pennsylvania , †  February 15, 1913 in Greensburg , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1879 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Pennsylvania.

Career

John Latta attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree at Yale University and his admission as a lawyer in 1859, he began to work in this profession in Greensburg. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1863 and 1867 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate ; in 1872 and 1873 he was a member of the House of Representatives there. In August 1864 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago .

In 1874, Latta was elected Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania alongside John Hartranft . He held this office between 1875 and 1879. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. The office of lieutenant governor was not created until 1873 through a reform of the state constitution, and Latta was the first incumbent. After serving as Lieutenant Governor, he returned to practice as a lawyer. He died on February 15, 1913 in Greensburg, where he was also buried.
