William Scranton

William Worthington Scranton III (born July 20, 1947 in Scranton , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . Between 1979 and 1987 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Pennsylvania.

Career

William Scranton came from a wealthy and influential Pennsylvania family. His great-great-grandfather was the founder of the town of Scranton; his father William Scranton (1917-2013) was Governor of Pennsylvania from 1963 to 1967 . He studied at Yale University and then worked in the newspaper industry. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1976 he became a member of the state executive committee of his party.

In 1978, Scranton was elected Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania alongside Dick Thornburgh . He held this office after a re-election between 1979 and 1987. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . At the time of his election, he was the youngest lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania. He was also the chairman of the Governor's Energy Council and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Council . In these qualities he was also involved in the investigation of the reactor accident in the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in 1979 . In 1986 he ran unsuccessfully for governor. He then moved to California , where he managed or founded several companies. In 1994 he returned to Pennsylvania. He became a board member and chairman of various companies. In 2006, he initially applied in his party's gubernatorial primaries. But since this candidacy had no chance, he withdrew it. He was also being discussed for the 2010 elections. But he decided not to compete.
