Joseph B. "Joe" Scarnati (* 2. January 1962 in Brockway , Jefferson County , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . A member of the Pennsylvania Senate since 2001, he has presided over the Chamber of Parliament as its President since 2007 . He also served as acting lieutenant governor of the state of Pennsylvania between 2008 and 2011 in his capacity as Senate President after a vacancy arose in that office.

Career

Joseph Scarnati studied business administration at the branch office of the University of Pennsylvania in DuBois until 1982 . He later worked as an entrepreneur in the private sector. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He held a number of local offices in his home country before being elected as an independent candidate to the Pennsylvania Senate in 2000 , where he has been President Pro Tempore since 2007. Soon after his election in 2000, he returned to the Republicans. In 2004, 2008 and 2012 he was confirmed as State Senator. He chairs two committees ( Labor and Industry and Majority Policy ).

After the death of Lieutenant Governor Catherine Baker Knoll , Joseph Scarnati had to assume executive office as President Pro Tempore of the Senate in accordance with the state constitution . He held this position between December 3, 2008 and January 18, 2011. He was deputy to the Democratic Governor Ed Rendell , but remained President of the Senate and member of the Chamber of Parliament. For the 2010 election, he decided not to run. This office was then taken over by his Republican party colleague Jim Cawley , who henceforth served as deputy to the new governor Tom Corbett . Scarnati also remained a member and President Pro Tempore of the Senate of Pennsylvania.
