In Germany , President of the Senate is an earlier official title for the presiding judge at the higher regional and federal courts . At the regional courts, the presiding judges were called regional court directors . With the reform of the official titles in the higher judicial service in the 1970s, the title of Senate President was abolished and the title of presiding judge at the Higher Regional Court or at the Higher Administrative Court , Finance Court , Regional Court or another higher court at the state level and presiding judge at the Federal Court of Justice or another federal court replaced.

United States

State as a whole

According to the United States Constitution , the Vice President is also President of the Senate . However, this office is mainly of a ceremonial nature, the daily official business is carried out by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate . The vice president usually only serves as president of the Senate to preside over the State of the Union Address and to cast the casting vote in the event of a tie.

States

In the US states, the respective state senates also have a Senate President. Often it is the lieutenant governor of the respective state , who, however, only has a voting right in the event of a vote. This is also supported by a pro tempore president . In states without a lieutenant governor such as Oregon or Arizona , a senator from the majority parliamentary group is elected president of the Senate. The same applies to states that have a lieutenant governor but who do not chair the Senate. Illinois is an example of this .

Argentina

The Argentine Vice President chairs the Argentine Senate . Currently this is Julio Cobos . However, the Argentine Vice President is represented most of the time by the Provisional President of the Argentine Senate . He also succeeds the President if the Vice-President has died or has previously resigned. This last happened in December 2001 when Ramón Puerta succeeded the resigned Fernando de la Rúa .
